One day strike in Dominican Republic



A one-day strike took place in the Dominican Republic today, with heightened police presence in the zona colonial. The strike was called by the Foro Social Alternativo, a group of political parties including MIUCA and other social organizations.

PLD accuses PRD candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado of corrupt business deals.

The ruling party, PLD, released documents showing PRD candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado may have had corrupt business deals while director of public works under former president Hipolito Mejia.

Recent surveys (released 2/17/08) show varied findings: one showed PLD Fernandez with a 13 point lead, enough to win without a runoff; and another reported them tied.

BANGALORE, Feb. 11, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Standard & Poor's (NYSE:MHP) Ratings Services said it placed Dominican Republic's 'B+' long and 'B' short-term sovereign credit ratings on negative watch, citing uncertainty surrounding promissory notes due between March and July, including the possibility that they will not be paid because they were issued illegally.
